Letters to the editor that pinpoint the one-sidedness of the media
in its reporting of the conflicts in the Middle East. These letters
are fact-based responses to the emotional bias of those writing,
and sometimes creating, the news that is erroneously considered
"fit to print."
From Inside FOR THE RECORD:
February 18, 2008
To the Editor (NYT):
As much as I concur with Ronen Bergman (OpEd "Bracing for
Revenge" February 18, 2008) about the anxiety of waiting
for Hezbollah's bloody reply to the assassination of its master
terrorist Imad Mugniyah, he doesn't suggest an alternative to
targeted killings of the terrorist leaders. It may well be that
there is none.
Yes, it is very likely that Israel will suffer civilian casualties,
but if Mugniyah had been killed thirty years ago, there are hundreds
of U.S. Marines and scores of civilians who would likely be alive
today. The terrorists have made this a fight to the death. We
have not been given a choice and must, therefore, make the preservation
of our lives paramount.
When you are being hunted - as are Americans and Israelis, by
Arab terrorists - one does not have the luxury of rational debate.
And if self-preservation is an instinct we possess, then self-defense
is a right we must exercise.
